Close to the edge: Exploring the global hip hop diaspora

Kidd, G. (2020). Expressions of identity by South Sudanese hip hop artists in Melbourne, Australia. Australasian review of African studies, 41(2), 147–163.

My first ever publication. I wrote this for a year 12 VCE subject called Extended Investigation, which asks students to write a 4000 word research paper on a topic of their choosing. At the time I must’ve been into hip hop, as I wrote about the use of hip hop music to index particular (black) identities for two South Sudanese musicians living in Melbourne. Though it’s a very rough piece of work (I was 17!), I still think it says something very interesting about the global social meaning of hip hop music performance.
